about

The work Spectral Churches was commissioned by the StreetCanvas festival and was performed during the first edition of the festival on October 7, 2010, in the middle of the Oude Groenmarkt in Haarlem, The Netherlands. The music on this cd is a multi-tracked live recording of the performance.
Only sounds from the bells in the carillon of the Grote of St. Bavokerk in Haarlem are used in this piece. The piece is based on the mechanical bell sequence ‘‘De Damiaatjes’’ that plays every night from 9 p.m. for approximately 26 minutes. Spectral Churches is an extrapolation on the sequence and was performed during its course.
The work was presented as a structured improvisation in a six-channel electronic environment alongside live, unamplified playing on the carillon in the belfry of the Grote of St. Bavokerk, and the mechanical bell sequence.

Spectral Churches is available as a limited edition cd and as a digital download.
